Tiger Becs
Dawson Street, Dublin 2.

Myself and my partner visited Tiger Becs on a Wednesday night. We were seated immediately by a friendly greeter at a table opposite the bar, as the main restaurant area was fully booked.
We both eat out frequently and love wine as much as we love food, so we're always happy to shell out for a good wine. However, a quick glance through the wine list revealed the mark-up to be quite a bit steeper than even we are used to, so we opted for a mineral water and a Tiger beer instead. Service was efficient, slightly surly, even, but in no time at all we had our drinks and starters in front of us. My starter, Thai dim sum, consisted of four pork and prawn dumplings that tasted strongly of pork and little else. My partner's meat sung was served with near-frozen iceberg lettuce that had turned translucent from the cold, the inner parts of the leaves covered in ice. We complained and were told that it would be subtracted from the bill - but why serve an inedible starter in the first place? It would be preferable to be told that starter wasn't available and have a chance to order something else.

For the main course I chose butterfly steamed prawns with garlic and scallions. What would otherwise be a delicately flavoured and delicious dish was spoiled by grittiness - at an average of EUR 20.00 for a main course, I do not expect to have to devein the prawns myself, as I had to before eating at least half of those presented on my plate. My partner's pad thai, however, was reasonably good.

During our main course we noticed that there were smokers (seated after us) at all of the tables around us. The draught from the front door sent the smoke straight in our direction as we tried to eat -- not the most pleasant dining experience for two non-smokers. Unfortunately, we were not offered a choice of smoking/non-smoking when we arrived and did not think to ask. As we finished eating, a large group arrived into the bar and the volume of music and conversation increased to such a level that it became impossible to speak to each other without shouting. As a result, we decided to forego desserts and coffee in favour of being able to continue our conversation. Our bill, minus the frozen starter, came to almost Euro 60.00, pricey for a poor meal. We will not be returning.
