My boyfriends parent are chinese/thai food fanatics and Saturday
lunch always involves one of the local chineses. On Easter Saturday,
whilst in their company, I made my first visit to the Tuk Tuk Thai
in Waterford.
It's a nice modern Thai restaurant, with wooden and slate floors,
and a simple clean decor. There were plenty of staff on duty and
we were quickly shown to our table. When I first looked at the menu,
I have to say the first thing I noticed were the prices (remember
this is for lunch). Most starters were about €3.50 and main
courses for €7.50. What caught our attention was
the combination starter at €3.50 also, so three of us duly
ordered this. The other two opted for Tom Yum soup, one with chicken,
the other with prawns. The combo starter arrived on one big platter
with satay chicken skewers, large juicy wontons, spring rolls, prawns
in a blanket, chicken and pork toast and prawn crackers. Accompanying
this feast were three tasty dipping
sauces. (I seriously considered cancelling my main course and ordering
a second combination starter, such was the abundance). The soups
were made from the same base, spicy and pungent and contained plenty
of meat.
The main courses ordered were
1. Gai Pad Mamung Himapan (Chicken with Cashew Nuts)
2. Pad Nam Pik Pao (Chilli Sauce with Mixed Meats)
3. Pla Rad Pik (Fish in Chilli and Garlic)
4. Gai Rad Pik (Deep Fried Chicken in Chilli Sauce)
5. Gaeng Panang (Flavourful Red Curry with Beef)
With all courses was the option of ordering mild, spicy or hot.
I ordered my red curry hot and I was not disappointed. It was a
lovely coconutty red curry, with plenty of beef pieces and a lovely
chilli kick to it. Very tasty. I also had plenty of my boyfriends
fish dish. It consisted of pieces of crispy cod partially covered
with a sweet chilli sauce. The only fault was that the sauce was
too sweet to eat lots of it. A small bit would suffice, but it really
did suit the crispy fried fish. The other dishes were all declared
to be tasty and I must say from the sneaky bits I grabbed here and
there, I was in agreement.
Three coffes were ordered afterwards and came served in lovely
chunky large style espresso cups. The bill came to a very pleasant
€62 for a lunch for 5. On my way out I picked up a copy of
the full menu and as a result, I am very tempted to return to the
Tuk Tuk Thai for an evening dinner to give it the full whirl.
