Cork is already home to one fine Mexican restaurant, but we recently
noticed the arrival of a new dinery, namely Poco Loco, and being
flush with money after payday, we were in the mood for some good
food.
The menu is this restaurant is short, with the same dishes offered
in spicy beef, chicken or veggie formats. For starters, we went
for a plate of nachos grandes with beef between the two of us. When
this arrived, it was on a huge platter with large dollops of guacomole,
soured cream and slightly spicy minced beef. The nachos were also
covered in melted cheese and came with a side serving of what was
definitely fresh made salsa which had a real kick to it. Other starters
available included soup, smaller nachos dishes, quesadillas and
other traditional mexican fare.
The main courses offered lots of choice, so I opted for a combination
platter of two main courses for €12.50 (instead of €10.95
each). I chose chicken stuffed peppers and spicy beef quesada. The
chicken in the stuffed peppers was lovely, just having been grilled
and placed in the pepper and then covered in melted cheese. The
spicy beef on the quesada had more bite to it than the beef on the
nachos and made for warm eating. This was accompanied by the usual
mexican rice and refried beans.
The other main course chosen was a mixed beef and chicken fajita.
The grilled meat came on a sizzling plate with some grilled veg,
a plate of wraps and soured cream, guacamole, jalapeno peppers,
and some mexican rice. There was no sauce in the meat, which I thought
was a good thing as the grilled taste of the meat shone through.
The only complaint I would have about this dish is that more meat
would have been nice but at €12.50 I can't really complain.
To accompany this we selected a bottle of house red (valpollicello)
from a short wine list for €12.50. It was a lovely wine for
the money, very light and good for washing down the chilli flavoured
food we enjoyed.
In total the meal cost somewhere around ?45. Really good value
for what was very tasty food in a pleasant atmosphere.
